Science Communication and Outreach

Here you'll find some of my science communication and outreach work! I've had the joy of talking about maths to a wide range of audiences, from primary school children all the way to members of parliament. You can mainly find me on my instagram (@thejennypowerhour) where I document my PhD journey and sometimes create infographics on maths and its applications.

Intersections Podcast - Guest

I was a guest on the first episode of the Academy of Mathematical Sciences new podcast series - Intersections. In this episode I was joined by my fellow STEM for Britain medalists, where we spoke about the competition and our experience of showcasing their work to MPs. We also discussed the importance of having decision-makers interested in mathematical sciences research, the benefits of knowledge exchange, and the importance of maths communication. You can check in out here.

Spirographs: the maths that links art and space - Royal Institution Masterclass

I designed and delivered a Royal Institution masterclass for the 2023 RI summer special held at the University of Bath. This was for an audience of approximately 50 year 8 students. The masterclass was on the topic of spirographs - the maths behind them and how they link to space. In this session, I taught the students how to calculate the number of petals a spirograph pattern will have which involves the concept of lowest common multiples.

I also showed them that if you trace the planet orbitals relative to the earth instead of the sun, the orbitals make a spirograph pattern. The students had the oppurtunity to play with a spirograph kit, create their own planetary orbits, and also see if the formula for calculating the number of petals in the pattern matches experiment. This workshop was very well received by the students.
